At Terra Nova Design Build, patios are how we got started designing and building in 1998. Over the years, with numerous projects, we have perfected our process of transforming backyards into beautiful, livable areas. Almost every backyard project we have completed has included some sort of patio, decking or walkway.

We work with your vision and the possibilities of your property to come up with a unique hardscape design. We have endless examples of completed projects, and our 3D renderings show you what the finished project will look like before we build. Every patio we build begins with careful planning for grading, drainage and a properly prepared base, so the finished surface stays level and sound for years to come. Seat walls, steps, fire pits and lighting can be designed in from the start, so everything feels like part of one plan.

Craftsmanship, coordinated

We coordinate masons, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and other professionals as your prime contractor. Some of our trades have been in business for more than 50 years. Grant stays involved through the build, reviewing progress and details with the team. We serve Montgomery and Howard Counties, Mount Airy and the Frederick area.

How do you prevent pavers and flagstone from settling or shifting over winter?

Good patio performance starts with a plan for the soil, drainage and the selected paving system. Base preparation, edge details and installation method need to suit the property and material; there is no single base depth for every site. Those decisions help address settling and Maryland's freeze-thaw conditions.

Which is better for a Maryland patio: natural stone or concrete pavers?

Natural stone and manufactured pavers offer different colors, textures, patterns and maintenance needs. We compare samples with your home and the surrounding outdoor space, including how the surface will be used. The best choice balances the appearance you want with comfort, installation requirements and budget.

Do stone patios require a county building permit?

Check the proposed patio against the property's permit, zoning, drainage, lot coverage and impervious surface requirements before work begins. The answer can change with the site, raised structures, retaining walls or other work included in the project. A general description of a ground-level patio is not a substitute for that review.

How do I maintain my stone or paver patio throughout the year?

Sweep debris, keep drainage paths clear and follow the selected stone or paver manufacturer's cleaning and care instructions. Jointing products, sealers and winter de-icing treatments should be appropriate for the material. Ask about the care plan when choosing finishes so it fits the maintenance you are comfortable with.
